bailey cane

bailey cane FLORA — A type of grass used for weaving and cooking. Bailey cane is the jointed stem of tall, sturdy grass whose outer husk is used in weaving baskets. Bailey cane baskets have wider woven bands than baskets that use other types of cane. The heart of bailey cane is often dried and added to stews and broths to add a rich, nutty flavor and provide a thickening agent. Though bailey cane hearts aren’t typically eaten—they are removed from foods once they are prepared—folken in some regions chew undried cane hearts for their juices.
