keening RELIGION AND BELIEF — A religious rite. Keening is a philosophical practice of → laymen that employs the composition and recitation of verse to invoke the power of the gods of religion and superstition. The verse may be spoken but is often sung, accompanied by an eolian wind harp. → Keen verse is often runic and combines the ancient languages and texts of most (if not all) of the archaic beliefs, as well as those currently held by the → folken. Keening may utilize or represent—and often combines—any religious belief, invoking the most potent of each belief’s history, supplication, or magic as needed. Laymen hold to the truth of all beliefs (that is, that some truth is found in the root of all belief systems, regardless of the contradictions between them), and as such, laymen strive for inclusion and peace.
