Sauingrey

Sauingrey CULTURE — A festival. Sauingrey is one of the four → Hidain (Holy Days) and occurs on the last day of the eleventh month of the year (or the eve of → Winter Hu). It signifies the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, or the Darker Half. During Sauingrey, special bonfires are lit. It is a liminal time when spirits and fairies are believed to move more easily in the world. Souls of the dead revisit homes. Divination rituals are common, often involving nuts and apples. In the northern hemisphere, Sauingrey is celebrated at the other end of the year: on the last day of the fourth month (→ gu-delak). Its Hidain twin is → Lunauinbroc (celebrated on the eve of → Summer Han); both are celebrated on the last day of the month preceding the seasonal turn.
