Criers
Criers ETHNICITY, CULTURE — A subgroup of the people of the → Skree. Criers refers to those who create one of two sigils of the Skree. Criers are members of the Skree chosen at birth who are, during their first year, subjected to mutilations of the larynx. Most of these children die during the initial procedure or shortly after. Since death is practically worshiped among the Skree, this is considered honorable. Those that survive are considered fit for the calling of Crier and chosen by their Dragon God, known simply as the → Dragon. A mature Crier has the ability to screech in an inhuman and unnatural way and thus create the second sigil* of the Skree, one that is chilling and reminiscent of the cries of a banshee. Indeed, the screeching is believed to call forth the dead or announce the coming of death, since the cries announce the coming of death at the hands of the Skree. However, they seem to have no supernatural ability to call forth the dead in any capacity.
